Charles Pennington claimed his sixth victory at East Grinstead Triathlon in a stunning time of 1 hr 3 mins and 25 secs, this weekend. Finishing the sprint distance race (400m swim, 25km cycle, 5km run) in second place, but top of his age group, was Luke Worthington of Tri Surrey, crossing the line in 1 hr 4 mins and 21 secs. Jim Burdett of South London Harriers, took third place (also finishing top of his age group), in 1 hr 6 mins and 17 secs.

First female across the line was Hana Kolarova of E-On Team, completing the course in 1 hr 19 mins and 39 secs, with Becky McNicholas of Epsom Tri Club less than a minute behind - finishing in 1 hr 20 mins and 19 secs. Third place was taken by Sophie Hodge, of Tri Surrey, with a highly commendable time of 1 hr 20 mins and 45 secs.

Kona Ironman veteran Charles Pennington, who races for Team Freespeed, said: “I was pushed hard by the other competitors which helped motivate me. It never gets easier though! It is definitely a shock to the system after training for the longer distance events but I love to come back and test myself on roads that I ride regularly and use this event as a test of my fitness at the start of each year. It’s been a tough year for injuries so I'm super happy to come away with the win.”

In a closely contested Ladies Try-A-Tri race Katherine Ross clinched first place in 47 mins 46 secs.

However, Katherine’s son Barnaby had to settle for fastest male, and second overall, in the youth race. Noemie Thomson, of Tonbridge Swimming Club, took first place in this event with a storming time of 37 mins 41 secs, seven minutes quicker than her closest rival.

The event once again demonstrated the diversity and inclusivity of triathlon with inspiring performances from all competitors, which saw ages ranging from 15 to 80+. One particularly inspiring competitor was paratriathlete Nicola Wilding, who has been learning to swim front crawl, despite tragically losing her hand in a car accident. Nicola, a member of Tri Surrey who also swims with East Grinstead Triathlon Club, said: “It’s a very well organised race and I got amazing support from everyone.” Nicola, who is taking on her first Olympic distance race (1500m swim, 40k cycle, 10km run) in July, urges anyone thinking of doing a triathlon to get stuck in. She said: “You have to do it! The sense of achievement is the best feeling in the world. You get to meet great, likeminded people and you’re buzzing at the end.”
