East Grinstead Triathlon Club will be running the 32nd edition of their acclaimed triathlon on 14th May 2017.
Following feedback over the last few years from competitors, volunteers and other stakeholders the decision has been taken to make changes to the format of the East Grinstead Triathlon races in 2017.
The safety of our competitors, volunteers and other road users has been our primary concern and we feel that the changes we are to introduce will positively reduce the risks to all parties.
The swim distance in the Sprint race will be reduced from 500 meters to 400 metres and in the Ladies Try-a-Tri from 250 meters to 200 metres. The rationale behind this change is not to give an advantage to less strong swimmers but, paradoxically, to level the playing field on the cycle leg! Those who know the East Grinstead area will be aware of the major new housing developments and road layout changes that have occurred over the years and the substantial increases in traffic volumes that have resulted? For our race this has led to significant difficulties and increased risk on the cycle leg particularly in Moat Road (immediately after the start of the cycle routes) and in the villages of Ashurst Wood (for the Try-a-Tri) and Hartfield (for the Sprint). Reducing the swim distance will mean that the cycle section should be completed by all competitors approximately one hour earlier than in past races. With less traffic on the road your ride time could be less and should certainly be safer?
Over its 30 year plus history, the East Grinstead Triathlon has changed many times (as some who are still on the Race Committee and where involved in the very first race constantly remind us!) and so whilst we cherish its tradition we need to acknowledge the world and public roads we are now racing on are not the same? As previous supporters or potential new competitors in our race I trust you will accept the changes we are making and we look forward to seeing you at the 32nd East Grinstead Triathlon on Sunday 14th May 2017

The Event consists of three races:
The Classic East Grinstead Sprint Triathlon: a 400 meter Swim, 26km Bike and a 5km Run. The swim is in the Kings Centre Pool and after a swift transition the bike will take you though Forest Row and Hartfield on a challenging undulating course before returning you to the Kings centre. The run takes you on two laps round the historic centre of East Grinstead before you return jubilantly to the finish
The Ladies only Try a Tri: A 200 Meter Swim, 15Km Bike and a 2.5Km Run: This race is a shortened version of the main race for ladies who want to see what this triathlon thing is all about. Year after year this race proves to be a springboard into the wonderful world of triathlon.
The Youth / Junior (15 - 19) Tri: Run over the same course as the Tri a Try, this race is looking for the triathletes of the future.
Please note that there is no waiting list or capacity to increase entrants!
